Paul holds classes for students of all level of skill from beginner to advanced.  All class sessions cater for painting, drawing, pastels and sculpture with each student choosing what they wish to learn with Paul providing regular art history presentations and insights.   

Life drawing workshops are held outside of the normal class timetable.

Acrylic, Watercolour and Oil Painting Techniques

Learn to paint portraits, amazing still lifes or breathtaking landscapes using acrylic, watercolour or oil paint.  Learn the techniques of the masters as Paul covers use of colour and tones, layering and glazes and contrast these techniques with more contemporary and modern styles.

Learn about different painting mediums, brushes and canvasses as you incrementally improve your skills and produce your own compositions.  Paul's approach is to guide you to discover your own style and to release your own inner artist by teachning you the skills necessary to put onto canvas what you see in your imagination or present directly in front of you.

Pencil, charcoal, ink or chalk - learn to capture life in a drawing

Never even picked up a pencil, never mind.  Paul will teach you all the skills you need to create wonderful drawings.  All the way from how to correctly sharpen your pencil, through to quickly capturing likeness, to refining and finally shading, Paul's guidance will have you creating amazing drawings in no time.

Learn different ways of capturing likeness, the use of different kinds of light and how they illuminate your object as well as the correct use of shadows and reflections.  In a supportive and fun atmosphere you will progress quickly and will be wowing your friends and family with sketches and compositions of people, animals, still lifes and landscapes.

Pastels

Been inspired by the pastel drawings of Edgar Degas or the portraits of Mary Cassatt?  Learn to draw with pastels and create your own masterpieces.

Paul will teach you the skills necessary to create your own master pastel paintings. 

Be taught colour theory, tonal ranges and the way to apply light and shadow.

Learn how to use your pastel to make lines, shaded areas and add incredible detail

See how to blend and layer the pastels for truthful effects and how to apply hatching and crosshatching to add texture

Learn the different approaches between using hard versus soft pastels

Find out about special pastel papers, blending stubs and how and when to use fixatives

Sculpture

Create 3D works of art in various materials 

Create three dimensional art using clay, cardboard, plaster and other materials. Learn how to use various tools and hand techniques in creating sculptures of the human head, abstract designs and various anatomically accurate sculptures and interpretations.

Unleash your inner creativity and learn to create sculptures from traditional materials as well as every day objects.  For example, this Protea flower (left) produced by one of the students was created with nothing but hot glue and a carboard box.

Life Drawing

Learn to draw and paint from live models.

The life drawing workshops allow you to take your drawing and painting to the next level by drawing a live posing model.  Learn techniques and skills on how to capture a likeness quickly, how to adapt to changing poses and to find a form and correct line to transcribe onto your paper or canvas.

These intermittent workshops are by bookings only and classes fill quickly so make sure to secure your paid position when the workshop notices are posted.

Art History

Learn about the history of art, the greats and their techniques

With regular presentations about different artists, art periods and techniques, Paul provides his students with an insight into the art world.  Learning about how present artists and current artistic movements have been influenced by those of the past provides students the context necessary to understand and to incorporate this knowledge into their artworks.

Join Paul on his field trips where he takes his students to galleries and exhibitions where he will tell you stories and insights into the artworks and their place in history.  The field trips are held intermittently and are self funded.
